Storia/History
Donnafugata nasce in Sicilia dall’iniziativa di una famiglia che conta oltre 150 anni di esperienza nel vino di qualità. Giacomo Rallo e la moglie Gabriella, con i figli Josè e Antonio portano avanti un progetto imprenditoriale che punta alla cura dei particolari e mette l’uomo al servizio della natura per produrre vini sempre più rispondenti alle potenzialità del territorio. L’avventura di Donnafugata prende avvio nel 1983 dalle storiche cantine della famiglia Rallo a Marsala e nelle vigne di Contessa Entellina, nel cuore della Sicilia occidentale; nel 1989 Donnafugata giunge sull’isola di Pantelleria dove inizia a produrre vini naturali dolci.
Il nome Donnafugata, letteralmente “donna in fuga”, fa riferimento alla storia della regina Maria Carolina, moglie di Ferdinando IV di Borbone che ai primi dell’800 – fuggita da Napoli per l’arrivo delle truppe napoleoniche – si rifugiò in quella parte della Sicilia dove oggi si trovano i vigneti aziendali. Questa vicenda ha ispirato il logo aziendale, ovvero l’effige della testa di donna con i capelli al vento che campeggia su ogni bottiglia. Fu lo scrittore Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, nel romanzo Il Gattopardo, ad indicare con il nome Donnafugata quei possedimenti di campagna del Principe di Salina che accolsero la regina in fuga e che oggi ospitano i vigneti aziendali.
Donnafugata grew out of the commitment of a family in Sicily that has always believed in the extraordinary enological potential of its land and has 150 years of experience in producing premium wines. Convinced that it is always necessary to be open to change in order to grow and improve, Giacomo Rallo and his wife, Gabriella, launched a new production project in 1983: Donnafugata. Their adventure took wing from the family’s historic cellars in Marsala and the vineyards at Contessa Entellina in the heart of western Sicily and soared as far as the island of Pantelleria. Their children, José and Antonio, joined them and the house accelerated its march along the path of Extreme Quality: a project that focused on attention to detail, which clears the way for entrepreneurial decisions that ever more advanced objectives. As for the future, the young Gabriella and Ferdinando are already being “fully immersed” in the family’s activities.
The name Donnafugata (literally, “woman in flight”) refers to the history of Habsburg Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who in the early 19th century fled the court of Naples when Napoleon’s troops headed by Murat arrived. The couple took refuge in Sicily in the Belice area. It was writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, in his famous novel The Gattopardo, who used the name Donnfugata to describe the Prince of Salina’s country estates and in particular the house in Santa Margherita, venue for some of the key scenes in the book. Tied to this country home by childhood memories, Tomasi wrote in 1961 “…the favorite was Santa Margherita…It was one of the loveliest country houses he had ever seen…completely redone by Prince Cutò for the very lengthy sojourn of Ferdinand IV and Maria Carolina.” This historical event, so closely tied to the territory containing the Donnafugata vineyards, inspired the image of the woman with windswept hair found on every bottle and the label for Mille e una Notte.
